Can a Mickey Mouse Fish and Platy fish survive over the weekend without food?
I am teacher who recently purchased a Mickey Mouse and Moon Platy as class pets. I was told at the pet store that they "might" survive the weekend without food. I purchased a live plant for them to munch on in the meanwhile. Will they still be swimming around come Monday, or will I need to give the "circle of life" talk to my little 4-year olds? Thanks!

- they will survive over the weekend with out food so don't worry, you can buy feeder blocks but they are normally used if going away for longer they last 7 days
- This fish will be fine over the weekend with out food. Since these are class room pet if you want to avoid having to come in to feed them over the longer holidays (ie Chirstmas break) you may want to invest in an automatic feeder, which will feed a set amount of food at set intervals.
- Most fish can survive without food for a whole week. Some fish even eat once every few weeks. As long as you fed your fish some food, they should be fine.
- Fish can survive about a week without food, let alone 2 days. Just feed them regularly on Friday and then again on Monday. Platies will not eat live plants, although live plants do provide some extra benefits (such as providing more oxygen and taking out CO2). Good luck with your class tank! ZTM
- they will be fine. you can buy feeder blocks for over long breaks such as christmas break(they have 5,7,and 14 days blocks
- Your fish will be absolutely fine without food over the weekend. They will still be swimming around! I suggest however that you use an automated feeder over the longer periods that you are away - though I recommend that try it out while you are there to make sure it doesn't malfunction and over feed them. I have had this happen to me. I don't recommend feeding blocks as they can sometimes break down to quickly producing lots of rotten food which will toxify the water. You will still need to make sure you can have access to the tank for water changes, though I think if you change enough you should get away with it for two weeks at a time, I just worry about the six week holidays when pets are concerned but I am sure you have sorted this out with your headteacher :-) Good luck, fish are a great pet for children and teaches them about responsibility.
